Set in an apartment in Manhattan, nine of Harold's closest friends are throwing him a birthday party. Guests include a male prostitiute, a Roman Catholic alcoholic, a closet gay man, an African-American whose tastes run to white boys,; a flambouyantly stereotypical camp gay men; a couple with monogamy issues; and Alan - Michael's allegedly straight college friends, who has something to tell him.
During the party the self-deprecating humour takes a nasty turn as the men grw increasingly inebriated. The party culminates in a game where each man must call someone and tell him he loves him.
